The Great Surprise

As many of you already know, Tom went and surprised Tim Kosmala this week by flying to Maxwell AFB, AL to see him graduate Officer Training School and swear him in. If you know both Tom and Kat, you'll appreciate this story even more because neither of them can keep any sort of secret. They both spill the beans every chance they get! From what Tom tells me, it was the greatest surprise to date. Tim had just sent Tom and email telling him how much he was going to miss him and how great it would be if Tom could be there. Within an hour of him sending the email, there was Tom in service dress uniform at the auditorium to swear him in with the commissioning oath. I wish I could have been there to see his face. Kat said Tim was blown away and absolutely speechless(and of course shed some serious tears). So Tom and his mother, Colonel Gina Giles actually stood on stag with Tim at the commissioning ceremony....a first for OTS. After the ceremony, they went to the graduation parade and actually brought Prosecco out to the "bomb run" and showed everyone how to celebrate "Italy Style." They spent the rest of the day just hanging out and BBQing. On Thursday morning they finished off the visit with a 5-mile run, since Tim can now hang with Tom after losing a ton of weight and getting "shredded." Kat and Tom both say he has 32 inch waist now. Way to go Tim! In the end, Tom said he wouldn't have missed this for the world and would do it all over again if given the chance. Moral of the story--fantastic friendships are hard to find. When you find one, nourish it, and sometimes throw caution to the wind for a chance to make some everlasting memories.
